Artist's Comments
A commission I've been needing to upload for... oh, something like forever now. I had an absurd amount of fun doing it, and used it as an excuse to watch the series, too - man oh man, SOOOO much better than I even expected! To hear Baccano! described, I never ever would have thought I'd like it. But hey, Tarantino meets 1930's gangsters meets anime: what's not to love? Nearly ALL the characters grew on me over the too-short course of the series, so I was glad this was a commission, and made up my mind for me, so to speak. I had fun trying for an 'old poster' sort of feel, too, hence the slight Art Deco influences and aged texture.
The relationship between Claire (the guy XD) and Chane isn't explored as far as it could be in the series, but is left hanging, with the implication that there'll be more to come, and I like that. The commissioner asked me to incorporate some Tarot imagery into this, so my apologies in advance for anything I'm screwing up. Claire is meant to evoke the Hanged Man, both because of his history with the circus, and to represent the freedom he's offering Chane, who evokes the Tower. They are mirrored by the tower and tree behind them - the Tower cracked but still standing, supported by the tree from the Hanged Man card. Again, I know I'm probably botching all this horribly, so please try to ignore it and appreciate the art instead? XD;;;;;;; Claire (Rail Tracer!) and Chane are from Baccano!; art is by me. |
